Chapter Sixteen
I struggle to concentrate, but his voice is ringing in my ears. âWhat did you say?â
âYou werenât supposed to hear that.â
Yeah? Well, too late. I shouldnât be surprised he figured out who I was talking about. I all but told him. âDoesnât matter.â
His jaw clenches. âMiaâ ââ
I try to tell myself to move on, but the memories of that night rush back. All the things I thought, wished, and felt swarms me as if I were reliving that night all over again. He has no idea how much his words hurt me. No idea how theyâve affected me since.
âWhy were you and your friends even talking about me like that in the first place?â
âJonathan and I had this friend who brought you up in our conversation. We didnât know you were listening in. You werenât supposed to hear that.â
âWho talks shit about someone at their own birthday party?â
He looks at me confused. âI wasnât talking shit about you. I was expressing an opinion.â
âYeah. A hurtful one.â
âWhat do you mean?â He looks so infuriatingly confused.
Why should I tell him the reason? He didnât like me the way I liked him.
The way I maybe still do.
âWhat did you mean by âit wasnât for the reason you thinkâ?â
He pauses. âYou deserve to hear the truth when you have a clear mind.â
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I hear what heâs saying. And heâs right. I appreciate his point. I deserve to hear the truth when Iâm thinking clearly. But right now, Iâm just pissed off.
âWhy are you avoiding the question?â
âWhy were you listening to the conversation in the first place?â
I sit there in silence. I have a chance to tell him the truth. Itâs so close; itâs on the tip of my tongue. Then again, whatâs the point? He didnât see me as more than Jonathanâs sisterâand he never will.
âWhy are you mad about that night? I didnât think I was being offensive,â he adds.
âYou wouldnât understand.â
âI would if youâd tell me.â
Iâve had enough of this crap. All weâre doing is running in conversational circles. âI donât appreciate the personal questions. Iâm going to bed.â
When I stand and start down the hall, he rushes to my side, grabbing my arm firmly and pulling me close. âMia, did I say something to offend you?â
âTrust me, youâve said plenty.â Heâs pushed me beyond my comfort zone. On top of that, heâs reminded me of the reality of our relationship. âThanks for dinner, and your little âgame.â I needed the reminder of where I stood with you.â
Where I still stand.
âWhat are you talking about?â Wow, he really has no clue. Of course he doesnât. How could he have known a silly kid like me had such a huge crush on him?
The least I can do is tell him about it. âI hadâ¦a stupid teenage crush on you back then. And hearing you say you didnât feel the same way hurt my feelings.â There. The truth is out. And the way heâs looking at me in shock makes me wish I could take it back.
